Are all mineral foundations are created equally?
True mineral foundations should include iron oxides, mica, and titanium dioxide among other elements, but any ingredients that are derived from a paraben, glycerin, or alcohol aren’t 100% mineral. Cosmetics companies have added back the ingredients they omitted when they first introduced mineral products. The label may read “Mineral foundation” but many of these products actually contain minerals coated in parabens or silicones. A true mineral foundation has a minimum of ingredients.
What ingredients are found in mineral makeup?
Titanium dioxide, a mineral makeup ingredient, starts out with natural titanium. It then undergoes an extraction and purification process in the lab to remove contaminants such as lead. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are both physical sun blocks, cleared by the FDA. Zinc oxide is also an FDA-approved skin protectant with skin soothing and protective benefits. According to cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson: “Mineral makeup ingredients aren’t simply mined, pulverized, and poured into compacts. I’d like someone to show me a zinc oxide mine. It doesn’t exist. Zinc oxide is synthesized in the lab.”
